Abstract
In Biological system, there are enzymes such as catalase, glutathione (GSH) peroxidase and GSH S-transferase which scavenge reactive oxygen species as well as antioxidants such as ceruloplasmin, protein-bound SH and nonprotein-bound SH including GSH related to defense mechanism. In present study, we have investigated the effects of ursolic acid (UA) on the endogenous antioxidants in order to elucidate its antiocidative mechanisms in liver of mice. The treatment with UA significantly enhanced the activities of catalase, GSH reductase and protein-SH level. But UA showed a significant decrease in hepatic malondialdehyde and carbonyl group levels compared to control group. Furthermore, cycloheximide, protein synthesis inhibitor, abolished the induction of catalase activity by UA in the cultured rat liver cell. UA markedly increased the expression of catalase mRNA levels compared to control group. These results suggest that the induction of endogenous antioxidant enzymes may contribute to the antioxidative action of UA agonist free radicals.
